Transforming the Australian red meat industry – Automated x-ray guided lamb processing

Automated X-Ray technology is transforming the meat industry by providing improved yield through the accuracy of cutting.

This video demonstrates the developments by Scott Automation & Robtoics in lamb automation with our Australian partners, Australian Lamb Company, JBS Australia and Meat and Livestock Australia.

Lucinda Corrigan, MLA Donor Company Chair, notes that the resulting improved yields enables processors to extract more value from the carcase and pass some of these benefits back to producers with improved pricing.

Lucinda also discusses the need for players who will go out on the limb in all three areas of processing (ALC and JBS), technology providers (Scott) and R&D support (MLA), for transformation change to occur.

Darryl Heidke, MLA Innovation Manager, projects that with MLA being in the strategic driving seat, especially as a producer centred organisation, MLA can leverage this development into objective carcase grading solutions for the supply chain and extrapolate this lamb automation knowhow into beef automation.

Greenleaf Enterprises (Phil Green et al), have undertaken an independent economic analysis that has identified the main benefits as yield improvement, with additional gains in the areas of operator safety, food safety and productivity increases.

Graham Treffone, JBS Innovation Manager, identifies that MLA’s R&D financial assistant via matching funds from the Australian Federal Government was vital in reducing some of the risk, especially with this current development taking longer than originally planned before it become operational.
